Barbour signs Mississippi sex education bill into law

By The Associated Press

The Clarion-Ledger--March 17, 2011

Gov. Haley Barbour has signed into law a bill that requires school districts to teach some form of sex education.

The bill says districts shall choose between teaching abstinence or abstinence-plus, which includes information about contraceptives and STDs. The districts must adopt the policies by June 30, 2012. The state Department of Education will approve the curriculum.

Supporters of the measure have said it was time for officials to pass legislation that could thwart the high rates of teen pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases in the state.

Barbour signed the bill on Wednesday. It goes into effect July 1.
