This year marks the second year that charter schools have been in operation in Mississippi. Now, there are three public charter schools serving scholars in Jackson, MS. Both Reimagine Prep and Midtown Public Charter School are opening their doors for year two–Reimagine on August 4 and Midtown on August 8. On Monday, August 1, Smilow Prep opened its doors for its inaugural year.

Reimagine Prep and Smilow Prep are both part of RePublic Schools. RePublic Schools is a charter school management organization based out of Nashville, TN. This year, RePublic is serving over 360 fifth and sixth grade scholars in the two Jackson schools. A total of twenty-five teachers work in the two schools.firstdayofschool2

“We are thrilled about the launch of RePublic’s sixth campus-Smilow Prep, which is the third charter school in the state of Mississippi. It was a monumental day for staff, scholars, and families alike. We are endlessly grateful for everyone who made this day possible-our supporters, board members, staff, scholars, and families,” said Kate Cooper, Director of Growth and Advancement at RePublic Schools.

Welcoming back old scholars as well as a new class of fifth graders, Midtown Public Charter School serves fifth through seventh grade students this year. The school is also embracing new leadership from principal Josalyn Filkins. She joined Midtown Public Charter School earlier this summer and has hit the ground running. Last week, Filkins, along with other teachers from the school, walked the Midtown neighborhood in Jackson handing out school supplies and t-shirts to scholars in preparation for the new school year.
