Tunica County, home of the state’s highest teen birth rate, is now the home of the second school district to adopt the CHART Policy! The Tunica County School Board voted unanimously on Wednesday (5/11) to adopt the “abstinence-plus” sex education policy, which includes abstinence education and medically-accurate information about contraceptives and personal responsibility. The district’s curriculum specialist played a major role in building district support for CHART. And during our presentation to the school board, it was clear that many community members saw the need for effective sex education programs. In the coming months, the district will select their preferred sex ed curricula, and teachers will be trained by the Mississippi State Department of Health. The curricula, teacher training, and additional assistance will be provided at no cost to the district.
Now that both Tunica and Benton Counties are on board, we should see other districts move closer to adopting the CHART policy. If you’re interested in becoming a CHART advocate, please contact MSF Deputy Director Sanford Johnson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
