The House Judiciary (A) Committee failed to take action on HB 64 by the February 9 deadline, causing this bill to die on the House floor.
Explanation of the Bill
HB 64 would require that childcare facilities purchase and maintain at least $1 million in liability insurance for each childcare facility they operate. Facilities that failed to purchase at least $1 million in liability insurance for each of their childcare facilities may be denied or refused a license.
As it exists now, there is no requirement that childcare facilities maintain liability insurance. The aim of this legislation is admirable; it may also be cost prohibitive to the childcare community which operates on notoriously slim profit margins. Depending on the cost of this additional requirement, it may inadvertently drive some facilities out of business if they are not already voluntarily carrying an insurance policy at least this large.
