The House Appropriations Committee failed to take action on HB 731 by the January 31 deadline, causing this bill to die in committee.
Explanation of the Bill
House Bill 731 would provide a $4,000 annual salary supplement to National Board Certified Teachers in any school district that is classified as a geographical critical shortage area. The $4,000 would be in addition to the existing $6,000 salary supplement these teachers already receive for having a Master Teacher Certificate from the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards.
Currently, this supplement is only available to National Board Certified Teachers in a limited number of counties (Claiborne, Adams, Jefferson, Wilkinson, Amite, Bolivar, Coahoma, Leflore, Quitman, Sharkey, Issaquena, Sunflower, Washington, Holmes, Yazoo and Tallahatchie counties). HB 731 would expand this supplement to include all teachers in geographic critical shortage areas.
