“Do not get lost in a sea of despair. Do not become bitter or hostile. Be hopeful; be optimistic. Never, ever be afraid to make some noise and get in good trouble, necessary trouble. We will find a way to make a way out of no way.”Rep. John Lewis
Reimagine Prep is located in Jackson, Mississippi.
Reimagine Prep was the first public charter school to receive approval and open in Mississippi. It is also the first Mississippi school that is a part of the RePublic Schools charter school network. (Today, there are four schools in Jackson that are part of RePublic Schools. They each have their own identity and make changes in their educational strategy based on the needs of the student population and the vision of the school leader.)
RePublic Schools originated in Nashville, Tennessee, by its founder Ravi Gupta. His vision was to open multiple charter schools to increase access to excellent public education. He chose the South as the location for his schools because “the South has the lowest economic mobility of anywhere in the country.” RePublic Schools are located in Nashville and Jackson.
Being part of a larger charter school network allows RePublic schools to grow leaders from within their schools. Christina McDonald, a former teacher at RePublic School in Nashville, founded Reimagine, which features a highly structured learning environment focused on math, literacy, computer science, and behavioral expectations. Like most charter schools in Mississippi, there is a strong focus on college prep and life skills after college.
Today, Reimagine serves 514 students in grades five through eight. Reimagine Prep was rated a “B” last year and is the best-performing open-enrollment middle school in Jackson, Mississippi. Tresandria Hubbard now serves as principal. She was a founding teacher at Reimagine. Reimagine continues to have a strong focus on STEM and literacy. They use student data daily to make shifts in their curriculum to ensure their scholars get the interventions they need to succeed.
