Childcare Funding Matters: A Mom of Three in Hattiesburg, MS
Mississippi First is continuing its campaign to elevate the voices of real Mississippians who are highlighting the urgent childcare needs across our state.
High-quality childcare is essential for children, working families, and our state’s economic future—but today, too many Mississippi families struggle to access or afford the care they need. Our video series spotlights real stories from families and providers across the state to show why investing in childcare is not optional—it’s urgent. In our third installment, you will hear from Devon Clay, a mom of three living in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, about the impact that shifts to access to childcare vouchers has had on her family. Devon is an IT Support Specialist who pays $700 per month for her youngest child’s childcare expenses.

When childcare is accessible and affordable, families succeed, providers remain open, and communities grow stronger. Increased appropriations to Mississippi’s Child Care Payment program would allow moms like Devon to ensure their children are in high-quality and safe environments.
