Mississippi First works with charter school operators, advocates, and policymakers to support high-quality charter schools. We are dedicated to creating the conditions for high-quality seat growth, including supporting new school incubation, access to facilities, new talent pipelines, quality initiatives, and advocacy.

Uncharted Territories
Uncharted Territory: Public Perceptions of Charter Schools in Mississippi Counties Without Charter Schools examines how Mississippians view public charter schools in communities where they are not currently available.
The report finds widespread concern about school quality, strong support for public school choice, and low familiarity (but little outright opposition) to charter schools. Together, these findings offer timely context as state leaders debate the future of K-12 public education in Mississippi.

Support System
Building strong schools takes more than a single moment of support. It requires a coordinated effort over time.The FY 2026-2027 Charter School Ecosystem Support lays out how Discover Mississippi Charter Schools’ partners — Embark, Mississippi First, and Mississippi Charter School Association – work together to support charter schools from idea to long-term success.
Programs & Grants
Mississippi First has taken additional steps to support public charter schools through grants and leadership programming.
Charter Schools Program Grant
The Charter Schools Program (CSP) is a competitive, national grant program eligible to state entities. Through this program, Mississippi First will subgrant 90% of funds to eligible charter school applicants to open new charter schools and/or to replicate or expand high-quality charter schools.
Charter Schools
There are ten operating schools located in five communities—Jackson, Clarksdale, Greenwood, Canton, and Natchez. Together, over 3,000 Mississippi children receive their public education in a public charter school.
