Legislative Updates – Week of February 2, 2026

This week marked the first major legislative deadline of the session. After February 3, any bill that did not advance out of committee in its chamber of origin is considered dead.

Senate Actions

The Senate Education Committee met on Monday and Tuesday.

On Monday, it took up SB 2294, SB 2244, and SB 2235. It failed to pass SB 2244, but passed SB 2294 and a committee substitute for SB 2235. The full Senate passed SB 2294 on Thursday.

On Tuesday, it took up one bill: HB 2, the House education omnibus bill. The committee unanimously voted against the bill, causing it to die.  Read Mississippi First’s analysis of HB 2 here.

On Wednesday, the full Senate passed SB 2071, SB 2072, SB 2099, SB 2103, SB 2236, SB 2238, SB 2293 (committee substitute; amended), SB 2515 (committee substitute), and SB 2524. On Thursday, the full Senate passed SB 2242 (committee substitute; amended), SB 2243, SB 2292 (amended), SB 2294, and SB 2494 (committee substitute; amended).
