The House Education Committee failed to take action on SB 2811 by the February 28 deadline, causing this bill to die in committee.
Explanation of the Bill
Senate Bill 2811 would prohibit school districts from reducing local supplements for assistant teachers in years that the state gives them a raise. School districts that violate this provision would be subject to a reduction in MAEP funding.
The current minimum salary for assistant teachers is $17,000, which school districts can boost by providing local supplements. Mississippi Today reported that some districts decreased these local supplements last year after assistant teachers received a raise from the state. SB 2811 would help prevent this phenomenon.
SB 2811 is almost identical to House Bill 1365. However, HB 1365 also provides for an increase in the minimum salary of assistant teachers, while SB 2811 does not.
