Latest Action
On February 28, the House Education Committee passed a “strike-all” amendment to SB 2364. As amended, the bill increases the percentage of MAEP funds that are allotted for the salaries of preschool teachers who serve students with special needs. Currently, MAEP only covers 70% of the salaries of these teachers, forcing schools to rely on other funding sources to cover the remaining 30%. The amended bill would require MAEP to cover 100% of these teachers’ salaries. The impact of the bill would be largest for districts that serve high numbers of preschool students with special needs.
Explanation of the Bill
As introduced, Senate Bill 2364 would simply bring forward the code section on the Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) for possible amendment.
