On April 2, the Senate Education Committee failed to vote on HB 1670, causing the bill to die in committee.

Explanation of the Bill

This bill has a companion bill, SB 2246, in the Senate.

The Mississippi Adequate Education Program (MAEP) is designed to provide 100% of the average salary for each approved teacher unit in an approved special education program as well as 100% of the employer’s rate for social security and state retirement (PERS). However, MAEP is only designed to provide 70% of social security and retirement costs for teachers of three- and four-year-old exceptional children.

House Bill 1670 updates the language in MAEP to refer to “preschool exceptional children” from “three- and four-year-old exceptional children.” This language is more inclusive for school district pre-K programs that serve children who begin the year as four-year-olds but turn five during the school year.
