SB 2425 would limit the salary of the State Superintendent of Public Education, the Institutions of Higher Learning (IHL) Commissioner, and the Executive Director of the Community College Board to no more than $250,000. Current occupants of these positions may retain their present salaries.

Historically, these salaries have been determined and set by the boards under which these officials serve. Each board would retain its ability to set salaries, but salaries will now be capped at $250,000. SB 2425 is worded in such a way that current occupants of these positions would retain their present salaries. Successors to the current State Superintendent, IHL Commissioner, and Community College Board Executive Director would be subject to the $250,000 salary cap.

On January 27, SB 2425 passed the Senate Education Committee. It is now awaiting Senate floor action.

Updates
2/8/22 Update:
On February 8, the Senate passed an amended SB 2425. The amendment still allows the current occupants of these positions to retain their present salaries (which exceed the $250,000 cap), but only through the end of their current contract. If any of these officials agree to a new contract after the expiration of their current contract, they would be subject to the $250,000 cap on their salary.

3/3/22 Update:
The House declined to take action on SB 2425 by the March 1 deadline, causing this bill to die in committee.
